Ponder, Peter Kwan, Mel Kwan</li><li>Lions, former summer staff members & campers</li></ol><!--Topic Heading--><div><b><u> Welcome </b></u></div><p>Tonight is a celebration of you, for without you, TLC would not be who we have become.</p>As TLC celebrates 75 years, I am more aware that this journey from its roots to now would not have been possible without each of you bringing your talents to bear. I know with a heart knowledge - and not just a head knowledge - that Texas Lions Camp is anything but a one-person show. It is too big, too complex, and too important for anyone person and it has taken all of us to arrive at this night and on April 4, 2024, 75 years in the making.</p><p>One of my greatest privileges in life, has been to have been eyewitness to the amazing acts of courage, self-sacrifice, drive, grit, blood sweat and tears that those who call Texas Lions Camp their Camp have so willingly given. For you did not shrink back from the invitation to give of your time, talents, and treasure, but you charged ahead where others have feared to travel. As you undoubtedly know, courage is not the absence of fear, but the will to move forward despite being afraid.</p><p>I am sure that if I polled each of you, whether a camper or a staff member, your first trip through the gates of Texas Lions Camp, were as terrifying for you as it was for me.</p><p>Stories:</p><ol><li>Eric Paslay</li><li> Nathan at Camp Suddenly</li></ol><p>TLC has taught me many things, but two things stand out as most important:</p><ol><li>Each of us has a personal mission, something only we can offer the world around us at the time appointed, in the way that we have to offer it.</li><li>The second is that it is possible to miss your calling in life if you don't engage. You can sit it out…</li></ol><p>No one is going to make you engage your calling. No one is going to make you get off the sideline and in fact, there are those who will even actively work to keep you there either by intention or omission.</p><p>I stand before you tonight gratefully in awe of you…when called upon, you willingly and courageously rose to the challenge and gave of yourself to see that Texas Lions Camp arrived at her Next-Level. Whether as a camper or a staff member, or as Lion, or some combination of these, you did the unthinkable, you dared to count the needs of someone else as more pressing and important than your own. You spoke the right message at the right time in the right way, so that someone other than yourself would be the beneficiary. </p><p>For that reason and so many others, I celebrate you. </p><!--Topic Heading--><div><b><u> The Right Question </b></u></div><p>Questions are powerful things. </p><p>I thought I knew TLC history well, but having now lived through the COVID pandemic, I have a much better understanding of the visceral courage involved to dare to step up in the face of such obstacles. We all now understand the unique issues surrounding the known, unknown, interpreted, and misinterpreted societal issues arising from being thrust into the unknown of a new, potentially life-altering and sometimes fatal consequence of a viral pandemic.</p><p>In the 1940’s, Lions asked the right question in response to the polio epidemic, “what are we going to do about the children.” This question was asked despite the cascading and seemingly unsurmountable questions yet to be answered were the natural result. All the Lions had was an idea and a nagging reality that they <u>DID NOT</u> have any of the things required, such as: a facility, staff, budget, name, structure, or reputation by which to meet the need. In short, there was no shortage of needs that would have to be met before the answer to the question of what they were going to do about the children could be met.</p><p>Not to mention, their answer to the question involved cohabiting children, during the summer, in proximity during the height of viral outbreak specifically aimed at all these factors – children, summer, and proximity.</p><p>As if those factors were not daunting enough, the land that had been proposed as the location of Texas Lions Camp, was surplus land owned by the Veteran’s Administration, General Services of the United States. Unphased, Lions began the process of lobbying congress, which took months of hard work, travel to and from Washington, connections, and strategizing culminating in no less than two (2), acts of congress. Having been challenged by General Services to raise $100,000 within 6 months, the Lions set about their next great hurdle of garnering support for their idea to be adopted as a Statewide Project of Texas Lions and raised the required funds by the deadline.</p><p>All these factors and more were courageously undertaken by volunteers and on April 4, 1949, the Texas Secretary of State signed and returned TLC’s Articles of Incorporation (TLC’s birth certificate), and TLC was born. </p><p>Of course, this is only where the work started and a great deal of fundraising and construction lie ahead – which continues through today – but because of their fortitude, the question as to “what we were going to do about the children” has been answered. </p><p>Today, the Texas Lions Camp has grown from an idea to a net worth of more than $50 million dollars and is comprised of more than 515 acres and 55 buildings on a beautifully maintained natural area that is encircled by an 8’ fence. We are truly a small city on the edge of a city that is dedicated to the enjoyment of Texas children and their families. </p><p>Our founders would likely be amazed by what they set in motion, none of which would have continued if it were not for those who likewise embraced their own mission and courageously stepped into the unknown, what I call your mission and calling. For that, each of you who have answered the call have my undying admiration, respect, and gratitude. </p><p>Video presentation</p><!--Topic Heading--><div><b><u> Closing </b></u></div><p>Teddy Roosevelt said what has become one of my favorite quotes as he summarized what it means to embrace your calling courageously and aggressively in life:</p><blockquote>It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. Every once in a while, you encounter someone whose hard work, integrity and sheer determination have produced excellence in all they say and do. Today, I shine the spotlight on <a href=“ https://youtu.be/U7dIeTZV-VU” target=“_blank”>Eric Paslay</a> formerly of Temple, Texas and now resident of Nashville, Tennessee. The Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, most recently <a href=” https://trrma.net/about/ “ target=“_blank”>Texas Regional Radio Music Awards (T3R) </a>song-writer of the year, and TLC former camper took the stage in Temple, Texas Saturday night to give of his time and considerable talent for the benefit of Texas Lions Camp. </div><p>The Temple Breakfast Lions Club recently held a music festival in the MLK Fairgrounds in Temple, Texas. The benefit began on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2:30 and ended around midnight, featuring many bands and headlined by Eric Paslay. In his own words, hear what Eric had to say about your Texas Lions Camp and what it means in his life:</p><div align="center"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MoDYUlIZRZ0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><p>This was the First Annual music festival and was produced by Lion Lisle Meeker and other “go-getter-Lions” in the Temple Breakfast Lions Club, including our very own Dr. Steven Ponder. Other Lions of note included Randy Sepulvado and the entire membership of the Temple Breakfast Club. The Club did an excellent job of arranging vendors, activities, and security was provided by a very heavy presence and professional cadre from the local Sheriff’s Department. I understand that next year’s festival will be “Blue-grass” themed.</p><div align="center"><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/PaslayFlyer.png" width="450" height="700"></div><p>Between bands and throughout the evening, Lion Lisle Meeker introduced and invited guests with a knowledge of TLC to speak about their experiences with TLC. This list included two camper families, Dr. Stephen Ponder (TLC's Medical Director) and yours truly. Dr. Ponder has had a significant impact on so many in his 42 years associated with TLC, including in the life of Eric Paslay</p><div align="center"><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/PaslayFamily.png" width="500" height="333"></div><p>To cap off the evening and to further contribute to the funds generated for TLC, Eric stated that he chose to travel without his band and just brought his guitar so that more funds would go straight to Texas Lions Camp as a result of his appearance. Eric also brought with him a one-of-a-kind guitar signed by over 14 artists for auction that included such names as the following artists:</p><div align="center"><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/PaslayGuitarSigs.png" width="500" height="200"></div><div align="center"><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/PaslayGuitar.png" width="450" height="300"><figcaption>Guitar Valued at $30,000...Randy is priceless</figcaption></div><p>Eric will expand his growing list of charitable contributions and benefits for Texas Lions Camp when he takes the stage and headlines for Texas Lions Camp’s Music Festival next year at the Kerrville Expo Center to commemorate and celebrate TLC’s Diamond Anniversary. Mabry, CAE</div><div align="right"><br /></div><div align="left"><h1><font size="6" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif">TLC Board Approves the Launch of <u>CAMP</u>aign Vision2020 &amp; Beyond!<br /></font></h1><div><br /></div><div><u>Kerrville, TX - February 13, 2020</u>.During the February 8, 2020 Semi-Annual Board Breakfast, TLC's Board of Directors heard a report from President &amp; CEO, Stephen Mabry concerning TLC's Master Architectural Plan and Feasibility Study for funding those plans. At the conclusion of that report, Stephen asked the Board to adopt and allow the launch of Phase I of the campaign. After hearing further reports and endorsements from the Camp Improvements Committee, Development Committee and Program Committee, the Board enthusiastically voted to proceed and TLC is now officially operating the Capital Campaign known as Vision2020 &amp; Beyond.</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/ExCommSSM_V20Presentation.png" alt="ExComm Planning Session" width="550" height="364" border=""><br /></div><div><font size="1">Executive Committee Planning Session (<i>Photo courtesy: PCC Stump Weatherford</i>)</font><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The initial phase will be aimed at providing one of the new bunkhouse quads, Lions Leadership Lodge, activity areas and infrastructure needed to support future operations of camp for kids. As the campaign gets underway, TLC will begin the planning and campaign design processes to ensure fundraising success over the anticipated, campaign life-span of 24-36 months which is the amount of time projected to complete the funding of Phase I.</div><blockquote><div>"I am thrilled to have the Board's approval to move forward with the fundraising and ultimately the construction of new housing to meet the future needs of our campus. These projects are necessary for the health and safety of our kiddos and to take proactive measures to ensure TLC remains a relevant and vibrant service available for future generations of children," said Stephen.<br /></div></blockquote><div>It is always the right time to do something to help others, but according to at least one website focused on the Non-profit sector (<i>The Non-ProfitPro)</i>, <a href="http://https://www.nonprofitpro.com/article/why-now-is-the-best-time-in-history-to-launch-a-capital-campaign-or-major-fundraising-initiative/" title="now is particularly a great time to open a capital campaign" target="_blank">now is particularly a good time to open a capital campaign.</a> Moreover, TLC has been working towards this moment since 2017 and is primed and ready to get started working on our future. Our feasibility study indicates that we <u>CAN</u> succeed at this and, we <u>MUST</u>! Future generations of children are counting on us. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div><u><b>Why This...Why Now?</b></u></div><div>Our founders likely had no idea what they had set in motion with their vision for TLC or even <u>IF</u> it would work. Despite the uncertainty of success, Lions dared to dream. As a result, here we are 70 years later having served almost 80,000 children and the model and mission has been pressure-tested and proven successful. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>But, as one might expect with the time-frame of TLC, time and elements have taken their toll on the housing offered at TLC, some of which is 60+ years old. Moreover, advances in constructions materials, installations, and utilities have advanced and will permit greater accessibility, safety and technologies for kiddos engaged in TLC programs.<blockquote><p><u><span>Considerthis</span></u>: accordingto the Texas Department of State Health Services - Statistics Division, therewere <b>332,836</b> children born with a special medical condition in the Stateof Texas between <b>1999-2016</b>. This figure <u>does not</u> include childrenborn with type-1 or 2 diabetes or those who will experience a trauma, accidentor illness during their childhood that will result in a life-alteringdisability. What we can learn from this data, is that if things stay the sameor even get slightly better, <b>very conservatively speaking</b>, there will beat least <b>a quarter of a million children</b> born every <b>15 years</b> whowill need the services offered at Texas Lions Camp. This time-factor is alsoconsistent with the TLC target age-range for participants.</p></blockquote></div><div><u><b>Bunkhouses</b></u><br /></div><div>Our plan for the future includes replacing our existing camper bunkhouses with new, accessible facilities. The below depicted schematic is an architectural depiction of the northern-most, planned quadra-plex. A cozy atmosphere, central, shaded gathering area and plenty of space are just some of the features of the bunkhouses that will take us into the next generation of TLC's service to children.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/Quadplex_550px.png" alt="Quadplex" width="550" height="367" border=""></div><div><br /></div><div><u><b>Lions Leadership Lodge - The Triple-L</b></u> </div><div>The<i><b> Lions Leadership Lodge</b></i> is a key component of the Master Plan. Not only will TLC need to demolish and remove its only two staff dormitories (now fully depreciated and in need of repair) to make way for the North Quadra-plex, but we will also remove a duplex known as the "Smith Building" (fully depreciated and in need of repair)  as well. Smith Building provides housing to one professional staff member (year-round) and our Summer Food Services Director during the summer. I don't think that I need to go into an in-depth discussion of how important adult supervision is to the successful operation of TLC's mission to provide quality, safe programming and care for children who have special medical conditions, but "<b><i>The Triple-L</i></b>" will do just that and much more.</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://www.lionscamp.com/NewsPad/uploads/lodge3_550px.png" alt="Lions Leadership Lodge - The Triple-L" width="550" height="258" border=""></div><div><br /></div><div>"<b><i>The Triple-L</i></b>" will begin each year by providing much needed housing for the nursing/medical staff, leadership staff and support staff needed to provide structure, supervision and care over the children engaged in our regular summer program, spanning 6 sessions and ~750 children who have special medical conditions. Later in the summer, the 75 room facility will switch gears when we open our diabetes program and become the headquarters for the 70+ medical staff members needed to provide care and medical support to manage 440 children who have type-1 diabetes. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>But that's not all, "<b><i>The Triple-L</i></b>" will also become head-quarters and home to the leadership staff arriving to implement partner-programs that are already running, such as Camp Discovery (for children with cancer), Camp Neuron (Texas Epilepsy Foundation's camp for children who have epilepsy), and Camp David (Texas Burn Survivors' camp for children suffering a traumatic burn) just to name a few who provide services to another ~350+. If you think by this time it has already had a workout, buckle up because we are NOT done yet. This facility will make it possible for TLC to further expand its outreach to NEW partner, mission-based, non-profit organizations similar to those listed above in order to serve a wider audience of children with special needs while supporting TLC's own operations - a win-win-win in most everyone's economy.</div><div><br /></div><div>When TLC's Summer Camp operation is not in session, "<b><i>The Triple-L</i></b>" will also provide new and exciting additional housing for volunteers engaged in TLC's workdays. As many of you are aware, the TLC workdays have become wildly popular and we now regularly run in excess of 600 people per workday at each of our three Spring workdays held on the 1st Saturday of March, April and May.<b> </b>As a result of this observation, I have recently adopted the following saying, which I invite you to likewise adopt: <b><br /></b></div><blockquote><div>"Before a single child steps foot, wheelchair, crutch or prosthetic on TLC's soil, almost 2,000 of the 34,500 Lions funding TLC arrived early just to make sure that the gate is open and the facility is ready for them to enjoy!<i><b>"</b></i></div></blockquote><div>I'm still not done. Some of you may be unaware that TLC has expanded its outreach through a three-prong missionthat includes our 1) summer programs, 2) diabetes education and 3) disaster relief, all three of which might result in what is classed as "service-revenue". Over the course of my career, TLC has participated in relief operations involving ice, wild-fires, floods, hurricanes, and sheltering of minors, senior-citizens and 1st responders who were themselves engaged in disaster relief. I would also venture a guess that if you are unaware of this fact, you would definitely be surprised to learn that TLC has provided safe-haven shelter to more than 2,000 individuals in the last 30 years. Such operations have allowed us to expand our service-base while raising both operating support and community awareness. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>While I recognize the cost of building is significant, the benefits of the new bunkhouses and <i><b>"The Triple-L" </b></i>facility are invaluable. TLC will garner much needed resources to offer while providing service-revenue that will discount the cost of construction over the building's useful, service-life. The design elements include a star (representing both our kiddos and that the stars aligned 75 years ago when TLC was founded to coincide with the coming full, solar-eclipse) with the Texas flag cropped neatly inside the borders. And of course, the Camp's logo, which is nestled inside the numbers "75" finishes the graphic representation. "Serving Children since 1949" celebrates our mission and promise both for the past and the future.I think our design neatly captures and ads a touch of class to our plans to commemorate this historic event. Coincidentally, four days later, a full solar eclipse will occur and perhaps not so coincidentally, the epicenter for this eclipse will be none other than...TEXAS LIONS CAMP IN KERRVILLE, TEXAS!. As if there were ever any doubt, one might even be led to conclude, that the stars have aligned for TLC to take its next step into the future.</div><div><br /></div><div>As Tom and Stephen have met to begin initial planning, they have begun discussing those who would be "stellar" partners to add to the endeavor, which will be comprised of Lions, TLC Pro-staff, Former-staff members and community members.
